I sounded to me like WECo isn't competing with OEM's, but is rather joining with a few of them... My question is, what will this do to Berkeley-derived Unices? If I were going to market a 68000-based micro, I'd certainly want to go with the system backed by both WECo and Motorola. A real pity, as I find the BSD systems to be quite a bit better than System III, System V, and children. -Ed

From: Ronald W. <Heiby@hi-multics.arpa> I seem to distinctly remember the AT&T folk at the January '83 Unicom being asked about plans for various Unices on such things as the 68000. I remember the response being something like, "We have no plans to compete with our OEMs." Did I dream that? Was anyone else there? Have they changed their minds? Were they fibbing? Ron.

From: Ronald W. <Heiby@hi-multics.arpa> I guess I wasn't dreaming. I just got my copy of the April ;login: which states in the report on W.R. Guffy's talk introducing the System V offering: "Mr. Guffy made the point that offering supported software is a new venture for Western Electric. He stated that they are not intending to displace existing companies that are offering products and support." From: ;login: Volume 8, Number 2, April 1983. Page 13. Ron. P.S. The newsletter, ;login:, is "The USENIX Association Newsletter".
