[comp.sys.handhelds] HANDHELDS mailing list and using MAILSERV...

dan@nic.gac.edu (Dan Boehlke) (03/01/91)

Subscription requests and unsubscribe commands for the HANDHELDS
mailing list are handled by an automated mailing list manager. Send
your requests to "MAILSERV@GAC.EDU" or from BITNET
"MAILSERV@GACVAX1". When you subscribe to the mailing list use the
address for MAILSERV that is the most appropriate for your site.
MAILSERV adds your return address to the mailing list. If your
mailer does not generate replyable addresses, send mail to
POSTMASTER@GAC.EDU asking to be added to the HANDHELDS mailing list
by hand. The MAILSERV command should be placed in the body of the
message. The subject line of the message to MAILSERV is ignored. To
subscribe to handhelds send the command:

	SUBSCRIBE HANDHELDS real name

To leave the mailing list send the command:

	UNSUBSCRIBE HANDHELDS

All MAILSERV commands return a message confirming their action.
Other functions of MAILSERV can be discovered by sending MAILSERV the
command:

	HELP

MAILSERV sends messages back with a from address of
"MAILSERV-REQUEST" if you send mail to "MAILSERV-REQUEST" it is
forwarded to me and you will get a letter saying to send your
commands to MAILSERV.

MAILSERV is not a LISTSERV, its commands are similar in nature to
LISTSERV commands. It does not respond when mail is sent to LISTSERV
instead of MAILSERV. Mail sent to LISTSERV gets sent to me and you
will get a letter saying to send your commands to MAILSERV.

NEWSMGR is the userid that the USENET news system runs under here at
Gustavus. Mail sent to NEWSMGR gets sent to me and you will get a
letter saying to send your commands to MAILSERV.

There is not HANDHELDS-REQUEST address. Mail sent to
HANDHELDS-REQUEST gets sent to me and you will get a letter saying to
send your commands to MAILSERV.

HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU or HANDHELDS@GACVAX1.BITNET are the correct
addresses to send messages. However do not send MAILSERV commands to
the mailing list addresses. It will get to me and you will get a
letter saying to send your commands to MAILSERV. It will also get to
everyone on the mailing list and comp.sys.handhelds some people find
this embarasing. If you don't know how to get off the mailing list,
a polite message to the either mailing list or to me will get you an
answer. HANDHELDS@GACVX2.GAC.EDU is the address of just the mailing
list, however it is not the gateway to COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS on USENET.
Mail send to HANDHELDS@GACVX2.GAC.EDU will not get to everyone it
could, please use HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU. HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU or
HANDHELDS@GACVAX1.BITNET are the correct address to make sure your
message gets to both comp.sys.handhelds and the handhelds mailing
list.

If the system you use goes down for more than a few days, or for some
other reason your mail becomes undeliverable, I will remove your
address from the mailing list. You can either check the list of
members in the mailing list (MAILSERV can do this, checkout HELP), or
contact me if you think this may have happened.

HANDHELDS is a bi-directional gateway between an electronic mailing
list and USENET's comp.sys.handhelds group. Tom Huber
(huber@gac.edu) and I (dan@gac.edu) took over the management of the
mailing list from SRI in December of 1990.
