[comp.sys.handhelds] YET ANOTHER CFD FOLLOWUP

mandel@vax.anes.tulane.edu (Jeff E Mandel MD MS) (03/07/91)

Gosh, this has become a career. I will try to address the points that have been
made in the last day, both as postings and as mail to me.

1) It is true that the evolution of c.s.h has been different from rec.music.*,
but as I recall, music predated the internet, and people have had literally
years to form opinions on what music is the best before getting on the net. :-)
2) While it may be true that there are many people who feel that the 48 is the
preeminent handheld, it is not the only handheld. It is clearly the only
handheld with a sufficiently rabid (and I use the term advisedly) following to
warrant a new group at this time.
3) The mail from the HP28 users (who are not also HP48 users) indicates that
they feel strongly that they do not want to be lumped with the HP48 users.
4) While I agree that comp.sys.hp48 is the logical way to create a
machine-specific group, there is at least one user who has told me that would
increase the cost of his UUCP link. If there is overwhelming sentiment to tell
such people to suck it up, so be it, but I'd just as soon not.
5) There has been concern expressed that some users who get the group
gatewayed, particularly via the Portal system, will suffer disruption if the
hp48 community is moved to a group with another name. Since clearly the
creation of the new group should not penalize the people who use it the most, I
feel it is important that every effort be made to communicate to sysops that
the new group retains the mantle of senority, and c.s.h is the new kid on the
block. If you feel you will be inconvenienced, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know
what can be done to help.
6) If just one person can give me a workable name for a group for everything
other than hp48, I will gladly use that name in the CFV. I am sure that the
HP48 community wants this process over quickly so they can get on with ROM
revision questions and the like.

Finally, I find it much more useful to get mail that is FOR something, rather
than AGAINST everything that has been said.
