[comp.sys.handhelds] Creating a group for the hp48

alonzo@microsoft.UUCP (Alonzo GARIEPY) (03/05/91)

I have received several messages via email supporting the creation
of a group called comp.sys.hp48 and seen only one objection. This
name should be added to the list of names to be voted on.

If it hasn't already happened, there will soon be as many HP 48s
around as Amigas, and there is every indication that it will be with
us for just as long. Although there is a comp.sys.ibm.pc group, the
Amiga group is not called comp.sys.cbm.amiga, and there is no reason
not to call the HP 48 group comp.sys.hp48. Given HP's penchant for
numbers, a reasonable compromise position would be comp.sys.hp.48.

Of course, if there are too many choices, the vote will get split.
Perhaps a modified voting procedure can be used to rank preferences
before the official vote to form the group.

I would like to add my name to the list of people opposing the creation
of comp.sys.handhelds.hp for the following reasons:

1. The current newsgroup is dominated by postings for the hp48, and since
this is the only machine >I< am concerned about, I see no problems. 8-)

2. Why should there be separate groups for different machines? You don't
see separate newsgroups for IBM and Apple machines, do you? 8-)

3. If comp.sys.handhelds were created, it would mean I would need to
press the space bar when asked by 'rn' if I wanted to subscribe to the
new group, and then I be required to press it AGAIN when asked where I
wanted to put it. On top of that, I would be forced to press 'u' to
unsubscribe to the old group. I am just too busy to have such
   inconvenience imposed upon me. 8-)

4. It has been pointed out that although the hp48 is hot now, what happens
when a newer, and better machine takes it's place? I realize that the
addition of comp.sys.handhelds.hp will be an irreversible change, and
never again will we be able to create another such group, nor will we
be able to delete it once created. Therefore it is irresponsible and
reckless to even consider making such changes without assurance that
the changes will be satisfactory for all eternity. 8-)

Thankyou Robert, Yes I've seen the light now! You're 100% right, the
inconvenience would be unimaginable!! My vote must now (sadly) change!
No Comp.sys.hp48

(My arse it will!)
