[comp.sys.handhelds] New Groups.

Rob_Prior@mindlink.UUCP (Rob Prior) (03/04/91)

A proposal for all you lets.get.the.HP.handheld.users.out.of.here people: How
about new groups as follows:

comp.sys.hp.28
comp.sys.hp.48
comp.sys.hp.jaguar (or whatever it gets called)
comp.sys.handhelds

Would this satisfy you people?

This idea makes the most sense to me. That way people who still use the 41
heavily could have their own place too.

Ya know, with the trend in machines being toward handheld units,
comp.sys.handhelds is going to suffer from being too generic again in the
future. Maybe comp.sys.handhelds should just be for general discussion of
handheld systems.....

I wonder if it is wise using comp.sys.hp... Comp.sys.hp is for HP PC
and HP workstation owners, and if they split their split groups will
intermix with your proposed. Other people have stated that users who
want to read all handhelds messages should read all groups created by
this split. If the hp48 posting are carried away from a "handhelds"
hierarchy then this will not be as convient. A possible solution
would be:

Delete: comp.sys.handhelds or alias it to comp.sys.handhelds.misc
  Create: comp.sys.handhelds.misc
  Create: comp.sys.handhelds.hp48
  Create: comp.sys.handhelds.hp28

  	etc.

I would advocate removal and redirection, using an alias, of the
current comp.sys.handhelds group.

I like this idea. It is essentially the same as what was originally
suggested, except for the fact that it addresses the issue of "I don't
want to leave comp.sys.handhelds" since it would make EVERYBODY leave!

However, it would be preferable for the comp.sys.handhelds.hp48 group
to be one that permits for future models similar to the hp48. A few
other suggestions that do this were the .hpcalcs and .hp-saturn
alternatives.

And let's not forget comp.sys.sr50 !!

...just kidding.

YES, I like the idea of classifying the hp's under the comp.sys.hp.xx since
this is the most logical way of doing it. (Oh god! I sound like Spock!) ;)

Is the Jaguar a 'calculator'? Is it a 'handheld'? Or both? I'm
not trying to be difficult here, but I'd like to see all of the
msdos-based "palmtops" (current buzzword) together somewhere, and
comp.sys.hp[calc].jaguar doesn't quite do it. Of course, there is
a real possibility that the Jaguar will be so successful that the
others will disappear, but I think it's more likely to turn out
like the laptop market, with no one dominant player (ie, none big
enough to justify its own newsgroup), and most of the discussion
centering on whatever is different from "desktop" msdos
(batteries, LCD's, RAMcards).

This *might* be another argument for staying separated from
the comp.sys.hp hierarchy, depending on whether you think the
Jaguar is likely to be discussed wherever the hp calculators are
discussed (I'm not entirely convinced that will be the case, but
we'll find out soon enough). If not, then it doesn't really
matter.
