#N:hp-kirk:10500004:000:409 hp-kirk!len Apr 12 14:30:00 1983 In the April 11th Wall Street Journal, Teletype advertised the introduction of four new terminals, including one that looked suspiciously like the BLIT (Bell Labs Intelligent Terminal) with a Depraz mouse. Does anyone know if the Teletype product is, in fact, the BLIT, and if so, what its specs and price are? Len Feldman HP-PCD

Re: is that a blit I saw in the Wall Street Journal? Blit is not an acronym for anything! And yes that is a blit (or at least a close cousin), your window to the future. More info on the Teletype 5620 Dot Mapped Display terminal can be obtained by calling Teletype Corp. at (800) 323-1229. They have some really spiffy color brochures and spec sheets on the unit. The April 21 issue of Electronics contains an article (pg. 170) on the Teletype 5620 bit-mapped terminal (aka BLIT). It contains a Bellmac 32 and 256K of RAM and lists for $6115; deliveries are to begin in the fourth quarter. The green phosphor CRT is 8 (wide) x 10 1/4 (high) inches and 800 x 1024 pixels (100 pixels/inch). According to the article, a software support package (which includes "a UNIX-like operating system written specifically for the 5620, a screen formatter and multiplexing software that allows the unit to appear to the system to be more than one terminal") will be available from Western Electric (not AT&T??), and runs under System V. However, it "will be less than $4K." 2. The 5620 is an upgrade from the blit. It is software compatible, but has better (--> cheaper to manufacture? simpler?) insides. 3. NO SOFTWARE IS AVAILABLE! If you buy it, you get it as an empty box. The sales rep suggested that I speak to American Bell to get the right stuff for it. I am not talking only of the stuff needed to make unix talk to it, I am also talking about the firmware inside the terminal. Can someone from Bell confirm this? Well, it sounds interesting. Anyone know if the software to make Unix talk to this think will be available? Do I just need a system V license, or to I need extra stuff? He specifically mentioned that he's been using a "Teletype Model xxxx" (I don't remember the exact number). When greeted with uncomprehending looks, he said "It's also been referred to as the BLIT." Aha! Rick.
