For the HP48sx of course.... I thought that the 48sx could do symbolic integration but either its really bad at it or I am doing something wrong. Since I am still in high school, I figured it should be able to do any of them I could. If I understand correctly, I should type 0 and I for the limits of integration (I has no value, and I can use any variable not assigned to a value, right??) and then hit eval and it goes to work right?? Well I tried: (S stands for the integral sign) 'S(0,I,(X+3)/(X^2+6*X+7),X)' in order to find the symbolic integral of: X+3 _________ dX X^2+6*X+7 First, is this the correct way to get at the symbolic integral?? After evaling I get: 'S(0,I,3/(X^2+6*X+7)+X/(X^2+6*X+7),X)' Reapeating EVAL only switches the position of the 3/(X^2... and X/(X^2... Close but not quite it. Still needs more work. I know this may be a tough one for a calculator but it has choked on easier ones too, the derivitive works great tho!! Thanks for any help Sean mental%bluemoon@nstar.rn.com

The symbolic integration abilities of the HP-48SX are good, but they are far from great. Anyone who has had a semester of calculus can do more than the calculator. In particular, it doesn't know substitution. If you read the manual it does state more or less what its limitations are. While we're on the subject, does anyone know if there are any math cards in the works for the 48 and if they'll have more symbolic integration capabilities? Carl Mueller (mueller@math.wisc.edu)

Sean, I think it only does basic integration symbolically. Basic in that it requires no algebraic manipulation before being able to integrate. Things like cos^2(x) have to be changed in form algebraically before it will do anything to it. Numerically it'll do any integral because it never really bothers to integrate it. Sal smmazzol@mtus5
