[comp.sys.handhelds] Latest Smith Corrona nonsense.

frechett@spot.Colorado.EDU (-=Runaway Daemon=-) (04/23/91)

Something odd happened today that I thought some people might be interested in.
First of all, I have the latest ML tetris.lib stored in port 2 on the
Smith Corrona Card. It is very handy there for a couple reasons. I don't have
to deal with backing up my libraries, as they are on the card, and it makes it
really easy to copy libraries.

For instance, someone who has been wanting a copy of tetris for a while finally
remembered to bring their calc today. She walked up and handed me the calc.
I opened the port cover of my calc and removed the card at the same time that
I checked that her calc was off and removed that port cover.
Put card in her calc, turned it on, brought tetris to the stack and stored it
in port 0 and I am done. Pull the card and put it back in mine. This all
took about 15 seconds.. I like that.

It didn't occur to me until a little while later that I had no idea what
the status of her batteries was and that I could have locked up her calc.

So.... tonight before a test when someone else that I know, wanted tetris
I asked him how long his batteries had been in, and he assured me that
it had not been very long. I put the card in his calc, turned it on
and the screen went black instantly. Within half a second, I pulled
the card out, ignoring any recovering keystrokes and the calc then finished
coming on normally and everything is in tact. I will have to give him tetris
with my HP to HP cable. (I won't use IR unless I really have to)

Now the point of all this is that I finally proved what I thought to be a
logical decision to remove the card as soon as you see the screen go black.
Oh, and when this person saw the screen do that, he said something like,
"Oh yeah, I saw it do that a while back, and it stayed like that for
a few minutes". ONe wonders why his batteries were low. ;)
So at this point, even though I know the dangers of this card, I still
feel confortable using it. It is a matter of being quick about things
when it comes to that.. I will probably end up getting another
128K card at some point here.. (CMT now $109 WOW!! ) and then
I will have roughly 450K of space to play with.. The 512K card sounds
increadible too. I wonder how the bank switching on the 256K and 512K cards
is going to work... Like what happens if the switching fails... .does it just
lose stuff into the great bitbucket in the sky or what. Might be some
fun little problems to play with.

*Picture of two 512K cards in my calc at once.. ;) ;) ;) :)* sick
