[comp.sys.handhelds] HP 48sx PDL Question

feustel@netcom.COM (David Feustel) (04/14/91)

Just got the HP48sx PDL update. A few comments and a question.

PDL comes up with an invisible display on the monochrome VGA monitor.
I had to start the program up on a standard color VGA monitor to find
out how to set the display mode to monochrome.

PDL /H doesn't display the immediate window with a monochrome VGA.

It would be nice if the key names at the bottom of the menu could be
clicked on with the mouse.

The immediate window execution is much slower than with kermit; there
is disk activity with each cr even though I have PCKWIK disk caching.

Is there a way to turn off the disk activity?
Thanks.

what IS PDL?
(I have a VGA IBM, sounds ... well, interesting, HP48 and VGA sounds like
a good combo... don't know what they're for, but what the hey)

Are you sure that, in the course of your testing, you didn't
accidentally close the Immediate window before exiting PDL? PDL
saves the state of the environment when you exit, and restores it
when you restart PDL. Try using the View menu HP 48 Immediate Window
command to open the Immediate window (or just press Shift+F7).

The HP 48 Immediate window operates more slowly the very first time
you use it in a PDL session, because PDL is making sure the HP 48
is ready for the interaction. After the first successful transfer,
the Immediate window is much faster.

There are a number of things you can do to improve the Immediate
window's performance and to reduce or eliminate hard disk access.
Look under "Contents", then "Transferring Data with the HP 48", then
"Minimizing Transfer Time" in the PDL Help system. In particular,
    note tips regarding these areas:

      o HP 48 stack

      o RAM disk

PDL stands for the Hewlett-Packard Program Development Link. a PC program
that helps with HP 48S[X] program development and memory management.
Among PDL's features are:

o An integrated "HP 48-smart" editor for entering and editing HP 48
    object text

o Transfer commands for sending your work to or getting it from the HP 48

o An Immediate window for working with the HP 48 interactively from the
    PC

o A built-in hyperlinked Help system containing the HP 48 Programmers
    Reference and PDL help

  o And more...all in a text-based windows environment

Where can I get my hands on PDL and how much is it (It doesn't sound
like public domain, unfortunately) ?

There is a demo version located on the HP BBS, but I don't remember which
directory it is in. It is mostly functional, except that some of the help
file is missing, and you cannot save your work to the PC. Included in the
README file, is a form that you can use get the full function program for
$30.00, IF AND ONLY IF you bought the original PC serial kit that came
with the floppies. You have to mail your ORIGINAL floppies back with the
$30.00. I believe the $30.00 upgrade program expires in June.

If you did not buy the serial cable kit with floppies, the part number to
buy the PDL is 82208B. The 82208A (the original serial kit with floppies),
but the 82208AW (serial cable without floppies) is still listed in the
EduCalc catalog. The list price is $120.00 for PDL. EduCalc is selling
it for $99.95.

EduCalc's phone number is (800)677-7001, M-F 8:00-5:00 Pacific Time.

Could some kind soul post the form here for the upgrade? That may save us all
a lot of time. Thanks!

Here it is, straight from the PDL demo README.TXT file:

UPGRADE FOR OWNERS OF THE 82208A SERIAL INTERFACE KIT FOR IBM
COMPATIBLE PCs

An upgrade is available for owners of the Serial Interface Kit for
IBM-compatible PCs. If you are a registered owner of the Serial
Interface Kit, you already received an upgrade form in the mail. If
you purchased a serial interface kit for IBM-compatible PCs but are
not a registered owner, you are still eligible for the upgrade. Fill
out the upgrade form below. Enclose a check for $30.00 made out to "Serial
Interface Upgrade Program" and the master disks from your Serial Interface
Kit. You will receive the upgrade kit (a set of 5-1/4 inch and 3-1/2 inch
disks and the manual, Getting Started with the Program Development Link)
in about four weeks.
