[comp.sys.handhelds] HP48SX: Problems with Smith-Corona 32K RAM card

jmaynard@thesis1.med.uth.tmc.edu (Jay Maynard) (05/17/91)

After reading this group for a while, I broke down and bought a 48. Nice box.

I saw a message here about someone who, referring to an earlier message, had
bought two Smith-Corona 32K RAM cartridges and had good results. Well, well,
I thought, cheap RAM is a Good Thing, so I went to my local Wal-Mart and
picked up a couple. One works flawlessly, but the second one does weird
things to the machine when I try to use it...usually strange displays, with
the machine locked up; occasionally "Invalid Card Data". Attempting to merge
the memory usually locks up the machine, and I must remove both RAM cards
to force it to go to the "Replace RAM - Press ON" prompt. Needless to say,
I've only done that a couple of times, as I don't like the idea of removing
cards with the power on. This happens regardless of which card is plugged in
to which port. I've taken the original bad card back and gotten an exchange,
but the replacement behaves the same. I've used the memory scanner to stick
random data into #C0000h, with the bad card in port 2, and the data is
written to memory and maintained across removing and reinstalling the card
(with power off).

Any of you 48 gurus out there know what I can do to get the second card to
behave? I really need that extra memory...

Please reply by e-mail, as my news feed is getting flakier by the day; I'll
summarize if there's interest.
