[comp.sys.handhelds] HP95 Hidden Stuff

akcs.joehorn@hpcvbbs.UUCP (Joseph K. Horn) (05/15/91)

There are so many things hidden inside the HP 95!

During the self-test, this limerick shows up:

There once was this thing from HP
That fit in your pocket, you see;
A cave man would stare
And pull out his hair
And wonder, what could this thing be?

And there is a game called Hearts And Bones (in the _sys directory)
that can be played by binding it to a key (in the _dat directory).

Have you seen the $1000 bill graphic (in _sys)? It makes a great
startup screen.

I have an HP95LX. I've seen all the stuff in the "hidden" _SYS directory.
I would like to know how to bind the program HB.EXM (note - not .EXE nor
.COM) to a key.
I would like to note that your message, being incomplete in explaining
how to do this, was very frustrating (to me). Also - don't forget that
DEBUG.EXE is in the _SYS directory. I've locked up my HP95 three times,
and have used up one set of batteries (in two weeks). GWBASIC works on
it, but the PLAY command doesn't work right... The notes are OK, but the
timing is wrong. Ditto for PC Magazine's PLAY command (a DOS version of
it). It runs Pocket APL in Text mode, but not the programming language J,
(at least not version 3.0), and I am a little disappointed in that,
because J is an ASCII-oriented variant of APL. I am currently trying to
find other languages that work on it (probably some versions of FORTH
would work very well). I am also looking for a nifty .PCX file to display
on my opening screen.

David Motto says that my message about playing Hearts & Bones on the HP
95 was "very frustrating". Ah, but that was the whole purpose; to
tantalize y'all into figuring it out!

Well, enough tantalization. Here's the scoop:

How to run the Hearts & Bones game already built into your HP 95:

(Dave Marsh figured this one out)

Go into the Memo application.

Type: c:\_sys\hb.exm,ab00,hb [and then press ENTER]

Save file as: c:\_dat\apname.lst
(each line in this file is a key binding;
this line binds the ALT-FILER key to the HB.EXM file,
so to run it, just press ALT-FILER after rebooting.)

Enjoy!
