[net.micro] Keyboards for the Apple

stanat@unc.UUCP (06/14/83)

I'm interested in getting a 'detachable keyboard' for an Apple II+.
It should have the usual typewriter keys, a number pad, and preferably
some soft keys. I do word processing, Pascal and Logo, so special
keys for such things as BASIC and Visicalc are not of interest. I'd
appreciate advice on brands, reliability, etc. as well as sources,
especially ones with something under list prices.

One possibility is to take an IBM PC keyboard and interface it to the Apple.
The keyboard has everything you want (usual typewriter keys, numeric pad,
soft keys) and sits comfortably in your lap. The interface is a five-pin
DIN connector; the keyboard has a processor in it that handles auto-repeat
and does some limited typeahead buffering. You'll have to get used to the
left-hand shift key being in the wrong place, but it doesn't take long.
I believe the keyboard unit is available separately from IBM; if not, why
not get the whole PC and sell the Apple? (Just a suggestion).
