[comp.sys.handhelds] Missing line of pixels on hp 48sx

<MASONS1@vm.utcs.utoronto.ca> (06/12/91)

Hi,
My HP 48sx was bought in october of last year, recently I noticed that an
entire line of pixels -- horizontally across the center of display does not
appear to be *working* . Any characters that occupy this section of the screen
appear to have a streak through it. I have not tried changing the batteries as
yet as I am curious to know if others have experienced a similar problem.
Thanks for any info as to the cause/cure.
                                                          Roger Smith

Sounds like you might have lost a connection on one of the LCD pins.

I REALLY don't think it has anything to do with the batteries.

My HP-48 did the same thing, only it was a missing column. It started
out as a defect in the upper left corner that gradually got worse.
This was a known design flaw in the earlier machines. If your machine
is a rev. E, it's probably something else.

In either case, send it to HP and they will replace it with a brand new
rev. E. HP is really good about doing this quickly. The whole process
only took a week for me, including Thanksgiving weekend.

Probably a bad connection to the LCD. Send it in for repair under warranty.

The same thing happened to my friends hp48sx. He called HP and they told him
that it was a defect. He sent it in and they send him a brand new version E.

I have the same problem with my HP-48SX (Corvallis Rev E) except in my case
an entire column of pixels is blank. Changing batteries, running self test,
pressing reset, adding/removing cards do not work. In desperation, I even
tried the Display Melt procedure in the hope that the screwy voltage would
jolt the pixels back on. No go.

Sometimes, however, whilst running self test (which says OK 48 by the way,
the little liar!) the column of pixels magically come on for a split second
before disappearing again.

I rang up HP in Australia and they told me to send it in and get a
replacement but I haven't done so yet because I need it (columnless and all)
for a couple of exam papers. I will probably send it in after my exam.
Hope yours is still under warranty!

I've had the "blank column" problem, too. HP fixed my rev. C
(not really, they sent me a new rev. E) in about a week. Thanks, HP!

Hi,

I seem to have a similar problem on my HP28S: It's a single pixel that
seems to be connected to a 'never'-gate.
