I have found as a student in AI classes that XLisp provides all of the
features of Common Lisp that you can get into in a semester or two. XLisp
also runs on PCs, Macs, Amigas, Ataris and Unix boxes. This is very
handy, depending on what computers you have available. The advantage
of Xlisp over using campus-based computers (e.g., VAX) is that a)
you don't have to travel to the campus computing center(s) and b) you
don't have to fight over access to a terminal. Since I never had a lot of 
free time back in college, this was a big win.

I don't know about where you can FTP Xlisp (since I'm not on the Internet),
but you can try the BIX BBS. BIX stands for Byte (magazine) Information
eXchange. Grab a copy of Byte magazine at a newstand and then regsiter
on BIX. Last time I was on there, the Lisp group and an Xlisp group both
had XLisp executables for down-loading.
