                    /usr/group TECHNICAL COMMITTEE
            TRANSACTION PROCESSING SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP

                          Monday, February 8

                       Bob Snead (208) 356-8915

We will hold the first Special Interest Group meeting for those inter-
ested in Transaction Processing beginning at 10:30 a.m. immediately
after the General Meeting of the /usr/group Technical Committee at
9:00 a.m.

Initially we will function as a Special Interest Group. As such our
immediate goals will be to inform and discuss. For this particular
meeting we will focus on the primary issues that should be addressed
by a transaction processing system. We will do that by hearing the
views of a number of speakers, including:

      _T_o_p_i_c _S_p_e_a_k_e_r

Goals of TP SIG Bob Snead, Amdahl
X/OPEN White Paper Andrew Davies, Data Logic
Transaction Processing and UNIX Katherine Anderson, AT&T
Issues and Applications Dieter Gawlick, Amdahl Corp.
To be announced John Lax, Unisoft
To be announced Alfred Spector, Camelot project CMU

As you can see from this speaker list, the scope of these discussions
will be broad, from specific products to research to a standards
proposal. We should take this opportunity to educate each other, find
common ground, and hopefully identify some areas where future
deliberations of this sort might be fruitful.

If there is a need recognized and some consensus, this subcommittee
could evolve into a Working Group, with the goal of proposing industry
standards for transaction processing.
