[net.micro] Intelligent 1200 modems

eric@aplvax.UUCP (06/22/83)

I recently went through a rather full study of intelligent 1200 baud modems.
We eventually settled on the U. S. Robotics 1200 Auto Dial modem. It is
Hayes compatible in all but a couple of the parameter changes. I have an
Apple, and it works perfectly with all of my modem programs. At the time
we bought them, they were $429. But prices are falling quickly. U. S.
Robotics is now advertising a no frills model for about $440 I think. No
switches or status lights, but otherwise Hayes compatible. One nice thing
about the Robotics modem, it has a switch for switching transmit and
receive lines and another for disabling DTR. This makes it fairly easy
to interface to various computers or terminals.

Any experience/comments/complaints/praise for the new 1200-baud
`intelligent' (i.e. autodial) modems becoming available for around
$500? (Such as the Hayes SmartModem 1200.) I saw an ad for a
300/1200-baud modem by an outfit called `SignalMan' for about
$100 less than the Hayes--it claims to be `Hayes Compatible'.
Is it? Thanks!
