Hi! I am interested in getting my hands on some good survey articles on Cellular Automata and I am wondering if persons reading this newsgroup can email me some good pointers. If there is sufficient interest I can post a summary. Girish Govind (ggovind@uceng.uc.edu)

A colleague and I wrote a paper earlier this year called "Cellular Automata and Discrete Physics". It is far from being a comprehensive survey of the field, but it does give an introduction to some aspects of using cellular automata for physical modeling. In particular, it mentions some of the motivations for developing such models [which the fellow posting from Japan expressed an interest in hearing about], explains the basics of CA, using examples such as diffusion, optics, and simple chemical reactions on a surface. It's not written in the jargon of any particular field, so just about anyone can read it. The article will appear in the book "Introduction to Nonlinear Physics", edited by Lui Lam (Springer-Verlag, 1990). However, last week I heard that the book probably won't be out for another 6 months or so. Please don't ask me for copies of this paper right now, though. I'm too busy to send them out myself, so I'll try to get my Dept. to release the paper as a technical report, and let them take care of distributing copies. I'll say something on this newsgroup when that's ready. -- Dave Hiebeler | Internet: hiebeler@turing.cs.rpi.edu Computer Science Dept., Amos Eaton Bldg.| hiebeler@heretic.lanl.gov RPI | Bitnet: userF3JL@rpitsmts Troy, NY 12180-3590 |
