[comp.periphs.printers] HP 2631A

john@csispt.UUCP (John Coffey) (04/07/90)

Seems I have had an HP 2631A forced upon me. It is currently
sitting in the middle of my living room. Anybody know anything
about how this printer is interfaced? Or any other specs would
be muchly appreciated...

Interfaces were modular. RS-232C, Centronics, HP 8-bit, HP-IB and
DataProducts parallel were available. Documentation may still be available
for the 2631A, but if it doesn't already have an interface you can use, it
will be difficult to upgrade it.

The 2631A is probably "off support life", having been discontinued over 10
years ago. The 2631A was replaced by the 2631B/G, which was replaced by the
2930-series which was replaced by the current 2235 "RuggedWriter".

Correction...

The RuggedWriter (HP2235) did not replace the HP293x series. Both the 2932 and
2934 are still made. The RuggedWriter is a low-end supplement to HP's printer
line.

The 2631A came standard with an 8-bit differential. This looks like a standard
25 pin connector, but was designed to work in an Multi-drop mode. If there are no options on the printer, scrap it... It isn't worth the trouble.

The RS-232-C minimum interface was option 040 this should be listed on the back of the printer near the power cable. Option 052 is the extended serial
interface.

It is doubtful that HP would be able to provide any manuals on the printer.
It was obsoleted March 1st 1981, and the support from HP dropped in May '86.
The printer is a good workhorse, just extremely slow.
