[comp.periphs.printers] Recommendations wanted on line printer replacement

john@amc-gw.amc.com (John Sambrook) (08/01/90)

Hello,

Our moderately-sized Engineering department is considering replacing our
aging line printer, a Mannesmann-Tally T-3000. This printer has provided
good service for many years, but is nearing the end of its useful life,
and therefore we are looking for line-printer recommendations.

I should point out that, in our printer area, we also have an Apple
LaserWriter, which has increasingly become the printer of choice. While
we don't dictate what printers people must use, we would prefer that
people not print lengthy listings, draft copies of documents, etc., on
the LaserWriter. I mention this because I am hoping that we can find a
line printer that can compete, on some level, with the LaserWriter for
user jobs.

To this end, here are the criteria that I think are important in our
selection:

    1.	"Reasonably" good printing of text-only documents such as
Engineering specifications and program listings. The printer
should support a "compressed" mode, selectable via software on
a per-job basis, to allow for compiler listings that are 132
    	columns wide.

    2. The printer should be as fast or faster than our existing
printer. Ideally I would like one that could print text in
    	the 600 - 1000 lines / minute range.

    3. The printer needs to be reliable. We do a lot of printing
and we need a printer that is designed for heavy use.

So, given this list of criteria, I would appreciate your suggestions.
Please mail them to me and I will post a summary in a week or so.

I'll probably regret this, but:

Printer vendors, if you want to send me some literature, please do.

Thank you for your time,
