[comp.periphs.printers] Tektronix 4693D connection?

wayne@ultra.com (Wayne Hathaway) (09/12/90)

I'm posting the following question for my wife; please respond
directly to her at hathaway@hec.arc.nasa.gov. If you can't reach that
address, however, please feel free to respond to me. Please do not
post replies, though, since she doesn't receive news and my coverage
is spotty at best. And thanks!

======================================================================

We have a Tektronix 4693D color printer we would like to use from
   1) a Macintosh
   2) a PC-compatible
   3) a Sun Sparcstation 1 Plus

We need to use it from ALL of the above. The interface to the Mac and
PC seems to be fairly straightforward and we have gotten some info
directly from Tek about that. What we don't know is how to connect to
the Sun, and would particularly like to know if we can connect to one
of the four parallel ports on the back of the Tek printer. We
understand that we may have to upgrade the printer to what Tek calls a
4693DXN and buy a 4511 network interface. The problem is that these
boxes run around $3500 and we are wondering if this is really needed
or worth it. I am particularly interested if anyone has tried/needed
to do this before, and if so, what solution you came up with.
