I am interested in hearing from people who have had a lot of experience with various brands of 24 pin wide carriage printers. PC Magazine gives Editor's choice to the Olympia NP 136-24 and the IBM Proprinter XL24E. I am a little concerned about buying the Olympia because I don't see it advertized very widely. I wonder if the IBM is over-priced just because of the brand name although I am sure it is a good printer. I saw a mail order price of $689 for the IBM. The earlier model proprinters were real work horses. I have had very good experience with Okidata 320's and I wonder if the Okidata 391 which is a 24 pin wide carriage model is just as good as it less expensive sibling. The NEC printers have also been recommended to me, but I don't know what they have in a 24 pin wide carriage model. The two features that I am most concerned about are jam-free paper handling and good print quality. Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

I forget the speed now. I'd heard good recommendations from several friends. More important, the market seems to have decided in favor of Panasonic. I was at a 'Ken Gordon PC Show' last weekend, and the two most carried brands of printers were the 1124 and 1624 (similar but 16" carriage). / Jon Sreekanth US Mail : J Sreekanth, 79 Apsley Street, Apt #7, Hudson, MA 01749 Digital Equipment Corp., 77 Reed Road, HLO2-1/J12, Hudson, MA 01749 email : sreekanth@rgb.dec.com Voice : 508-562-3358 eves, 508-568-7195 work

For what it's worth, check out the Hewlett-Packard RuggedWriter. It's the nicest 24-pin machine I've seen yet (but of course I'm prejudiced :-) I can't speak as to price, but I should warn you that this is an industrial-strength printer and may be more expensive than you are willing to pay. But you owe it to yourself to have a look at it... Regards Ray Depew HP Colorado IC Division rrd@hpfitst1.hp.com
