[comp.periphs.printers] What PS printer is best to hang off UNIX machine?

wbt@rex.cs.tulane.edu (Bill Thomason) (10/22/90)

We currently have a Laserwriter Plus strung off of our UNIX system. We
generate a lot of PS files using TeX. Problems arise sometimes the
printer seems to choke and hang in the middle of documents due to lack of
improper (or lack of) software handshaking which this printer seems to need.
One solution is to buy a copy of Adobe's Transcript. This should provide the
necessary software handshaking. Before we jump right in a buy it, we'd like
to explore the option of buying a new postscript printer. Is anyone out
there using a non-Apple PS printer with a UNIX machine? Have you done any
TeX document printing? If so, have you had a problem with the printer
hanging in the middle of documents?

If possible, I would appreciate it if you could give me company names and
phone numbers to call so that I could get pricing, ordering, and shipping
info.

Thanks,
-Bill

I have an HP Laserjet IIP with extra memory (2M) and an HP Postscript
Cartridge hanging from my HP-UX box and it works great at a reasonable
 price...

Now if you want something really nice, you could get a Laserjet III
instead of a IIP and you would get HP's resolution enhancement technology
which makes your documents look a lot better...

Of course even though I don't work in Boise (HP Laserjet land), I could be
 a little biased...
