[comp.periphs.printers] HP DeskJet-to-DeskWriter conversion, is it possible?

wyeh@sleazy.eng.clemson.edu (Daniel Yeh) (11/23/90)

I use a HP DeskJet with Macintosh and was planning to upgrade it to a
DeskJet 500 so as to improve the print speed. I was told that ,with DJ500
upgrade, the paper-drive motor and logic board in my DJ will be replaced.
This implies that all major parts of the DJ will be replaced except for
for the print mechanism, right? So I'm am wondering if it is possible to
convert my DJ into a DeskWriter since both DJ and DW use the same print
mechanism.

The HP tech-support people told me it is impossible without giving me a
specific reseason. However, I guess the problem I may have in this
conversion is the keypad/LED assembly and AppleTalk connector can not
fit in the DJ chassis. I think I can use DJ's keypad/LED assembly but
with some rewiring. As for the AppleTalk connector, well, I don't mind
drilling another hole in the back of DJ. So it seems to me that DJ-to-DW
conversion is possible if I can get the parts and software from HP dealer.
However, I've never heard of this conversion being done before.Am I missing
something here?

I would appreciate it if someone out there could point me out.
