Hi, About a month ago I posted an article about the unknown error indication on my DeskWriter. I have sent my DW to HP Service Center for repair since then. The technician who was in charge of this told me that he could not duplicate the problem I described after testing it for almost one month. My DW was back to me this afternoon and I printed a 30-page MS Word file on it immediately after setting it up. Guess what, the problem showed up again. It was like this: upon *completion* of the printing my printer stopped normally, but it started to do the non-printing self test (the one that printer does when it is power on) about two seconds later. The printer then failed *after* the self test with error indication that the READY light became off while the ERROR and POWER lights blinked sequentially. This error indication is *not* described in the Owner's Manual. Does anyone know what it means? I have tested the printer without connecting it to my Mac, it failed with the same error indication after a few PRIME tests. Now I don't get it. Why the problem occurs so frequently at my place but did not even show up once at the HP Service Center. Could it be that the power source is inadequate? However, I had used a HP DJ with my Mac for more than one year before buying this DW and it did not have any similar problem. My DW is plugged in the same power outlet as was my DJ. Is there any clue about what is wrong? Thanks for your help! Daniel wyeh@eng.clemson.edu

Regarding the DeskWriter problem: I have contacted Danniel about his problem and am working to help straighten it out. The blinking light errors are not documented in the user manual, but this pattern sounds like the firmware ROM is sometimes failing to checksum correctly, and other times, due to "bad bits" is getting reset and then failing to checksum. It would be possibly a ROM or more likely a logic board interconnect problem. Dave Neff neff@hpvcfs1.HP.COM
