[comp.periphs.printers] want advice on which laser printer to buy

er225711@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Martin NMN Thurn) (01/30/91)

My wife and I are in the market for a laser printer. If anyone can give us
some advice, we would greatly appreciate it. Here's what we need:

short version:
Print from both an "IBM" and Mac, preferably w/o (hardware) switching
Must do text smoothing and graphics smoothing from the Mac
"IBM" only needs to print text, no graphics
Speed doesn't matter
Cost: hopefully < $2000

long version:

We need to print from WordPerfect on the "IBM" and from everything (OK,
MSWord, HyperCard, EGWord, MacDraw, Excel, MPW, ...) on the Mac.
We need to print Japanese from the mac, which only looks good if the printer
does text smoothing and/or graphics smoothing. We want to hook up both
computers at the same time and not worry about switching. We will probably
NOT ever have both machines wanting to print at the same time. I've heard of
AppleTalk connectors for "IBM" machines, what is the cost & features?
The speed of the printer doesn't matter (thank god for spoolers). We're
hoping to find one that does all this for less than $2000.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Take a look at the new laser printer from TI that can do both
Postscript and HPCL (if you buy the options). The price is
amazing considering the features. You can find it in local computer
stores.
