[comp.periphs.printers] Tektronix Phaser vs. Seiko ColorPoint

dchapman@ncsa.uiuc.edu (Dee A. Chapman) (03/28/91)

I've been researching color printers for a few weeks now, and have
narrowed my search to either a Tektronix Phaser or a Seiko ColorPoint.
The biggest difference I see between them is that the Phaser allows
the printer to be networked. However, the Seiko has a larger print
area. Is there anyone out there that knows of any other significant
differences between these two... advantages and disadvantages?

Thanks in advance for your help.

We have both a 4693PXN and a 4694PXN (new ref of Phaser II PX). The 4694
has a printing area of 29.5x20.0 cm (on A4 special paper of course), which
is near an A4 sheet of paper (21x29.7cm).

As for the network side, yes it is interesting but the output rate is not
wonderful (30 Kbytes/sec) and it is uni-directional, so no log for errors.
You still need serial line. The network interface is nothing but a (large)
PC without screen nor keyboard which drives printer through parallel
interface and runs tcp-ip/lpr daemon.

One thing i would have liked to find is a sort of authorization files in
the PC, in which i could have put adress of machines from which i can
print in order to restrict its access.
