[comp.periphs.printers] fonts for hp deskjet.

Where can one find fonts for the deskjet? Also, if you can convert a font for
a laserjet to deskjet, where do you find the laserjet fonts?? It would be very
helpful if the software was FREE or Shareware or whatever.

I use shareware softfonts for the Deskjet which works remarkably well with
WordPerfect 5.1. I got it from a local bulletin board as the shareware
version. I upgraded then to the supported version. It offers dozens of
fonts as well as TSR download programs should you want them.

Some of the fonts they offer with 6 to 30 pts including bold on most is:
Optima Palatine, Park Ave, Rockford, Roman, Script, Square, University,
Basker, Broadway, Century, Cursive, Flourish, Garamond, Helvetica and Old
English.

The vendor is:
	Elfring Soft Fonts
	PO Box 61
	Wasco, IL 60183

I've tried to use these with MS Word for Windows, but it insists that they are
0 point fonts. Is there a bit I could diddle with debug that would help
Windows recognize them? I have tried downloading as the primary font and
printing from the dos command line and that works fine....

Help! I am getting bogged down with information on what to do for
my deskjet plus. HP tells me to buy their Type Director, but fonts
for that run about $99. Would Adobe Type Manager suit my needs? That is,
would it allow me to print all of the fonts that are available for this
product (lots and lots). What about SoftType? I would appreciate any help
youcan offer. Ideally I would use ATM. Any news on this?

Thanks,
Steve Herrod

Well, I have a DJ500 and I tried the HP driver and it works well, but
.... you are right in saying that the fonts cost $99 each. My solution
was to purchase ATM and Word for Windows. This cost me about $200 total
and now I have all the fonts I want and any size I want, all of which
print just fine on my DJ. The major problem with this is that with my
old DJ (the original) the printing speed for the graphics fonts was too
slow, and ATM and WfW are not very quick, so if you have a slow machine
then you will have to wait for WfW to format the ATM generated fonts.
Not to mention the brain dead way in which WfW undates the entire line
every time you type a character (to be fixed in the new ATM). Summary,
I used to use fonts cart and soft fonts, but I'm much happier with ATM
and WfW. Moral, if you have fast resources then my solution works, I'll
admit that on my old SX and DJ, Word 5.5 and soft fonts was the only way
to go.

PS: there are lots of PD fonts avalible for ATM, just as in the MAC
world they take up a lot of disk space but they are free, I've got all
of the 'HP' fonts already and didn't pay one red cent.
