I don't think it was a stupid question. I know how terribly hard it is to find a 68020 manual. I cannot find one in this town, which has the U of I, and an engineering college of 8,000, and some small computer R & D companies. I even had trouble finding a copy when I recently went to Sunnyvale California!! Motorola is very poor at documenting their chips.

Most computers in the world use the 8088/8086 chip, in which you most certainly CAN use self-modifying code!
