Greetings, Has anyone else noticed the advertisement for LSC 3.0 (yes, 3.0)? Pick up your latest copy of MacTutor and just turn it over to the back cover. Check out the box in the lower left corner. In bold print even (if I remember correctly - I don't have it in front of me). There is a small mention of a symbollic debugger. Has anyone else seen this? Is it here finally? Was I dreaming ( |-) ? Has anyone had a chance to use it yet? Just my mindless ramblings.... John "Honesty is such a lonely word; everyone is so untrue. Honesty is hardly ever heard and mostly what I need from you." --Billy Joel "Honesty"

Yes, you saw right, but that ad's been out for 2-3 months, so it doesn't mean didly-squat. I bought LSC about a month ago figuring "How long could it be? Well, I've heard less about it in recent weeks than right when I bought it. Then, on the net there was a bit of a furor over Think's upgrade policy (free 3.0 to people who bought LSC after some time in February). That's why I bought it instead of waiting for 3.0, but Jeez, how long must we wait, Oh Think? I also hope that the upgrade includes a new set of docs. I got the 2.11 docs with a bunch of papers stapled together for the 2.13 upgrade stuffed in. If I need to look for something, I've got to flip thru the manual, then shuffle through the pages to find if the manual is overridden. If I get another sheaf of papers, I'll scream. Kind of like looking through IM 1, 4, and 5 to find the info I need! Anyway, I hear that Think is on the net, but they are obviously ignoring these peevish calls of "When?" Perhaps they are very far from releasing LSC 3.0, and just announced it to boost sales. This doesn't make a lot of sense, since I don't know of any competitors that just released a new version that they'd be trying to steal the thunder from, but ya never know. A symbolic debugger would be nice for me, since I own a Mac II, and the MacsBug supplied with my LSC inly causes my II to crash at boot=up (obviously not the current version), so I am debugger-less. -- .......................................................................... Unfortunately, the ad was premature, for which they apologize. A call to Think revealed this information. I guess we all have to sit and wait patiently, like we've been doing for some time now. Kind of I agree, lets have a whole new manual! I got the 1.0 manual with the 2.01 docs (and no docs since...). -Ted Johnson HP Design Technology Center

In reference to the ramblings about LSC 3.0, I called Think, er, Symantec, and was told that it was an "eggregious error" that the ad was run prematurely, and that it was still several weeks away. The nice lady on the phone assured me that as a registered user I would see a notice in my mailbox long before it made it to advertising like MacTutor. I assume this is because they don't know when it will be ready, and lead times on ads can be anywhere from 6-12 weeks. Of course, the ad's run two consecutive issues so they may just be hedging their bets... :-)

Perhaps they are very far Not at all. Very recently (a few articles ago) in fact) I posted on the state of affairs with LightspeedC 3.0. The long and short of it is, neither I, nor anyone else, will publish a release date for LightspeedC. >A symbolic debugger would be nice for me, since I own a Mac II, and >the MacsBug supplied with my LSC inly causes my II to crash at boot=up >(obviously not the current version), so I am debugger-less. > The version 2.15 package should have the current MacsBug in it. In fact, neither I, nor anyone else, will publish a release date for LightspeedC until it is ready; we do have an anticipated release date, but for obvious reasons we will not announce that date. --Rich
