I don't think there were any Tech Notes between Nov 87 and now. (I don't
know why there was this large gap.)

Here is a summary of the April batch. I'm sure that the files will appear
on Usenet; you should use these summaries as a guide to what the Tech Notes
contain, and consult the actual files for more information.

#184 Notification Manager
New in 6.0 System; provides asynchronous notification to the user.
The interface is much different than early drafts of Inside Mac vol 5.

#185 OpenRFPerm: What your mother never told you
What happens if another application under MultiFinder has a resoruce
file open already.

#186 PBLock/UnlockRange
These are only implemented on shared volumes.

#187 Don't Look at ioPosOffset
ioPosOffset is not updated by the Read and Write calls

#188 ChangedResource: Too much of a good thing.
ChangedResource reserves disk space every time it is called. If you
calling >1 time, then too much disk space will be reserved.

#189 Version Territory
Finder 6.1 is going to support a real version resource for files,
which will be displayed in the Get Info box. There is also support for
assigning a version to a set of fils (eg, a system software release).

#190 Working Directories and MultiFinder
MultiFinder overrides the ioWDProcID with your process ID and closes
working directories when the application terminates. The number of working
directories is limited, so you should close them as soon as possible.

#191 Font Names
Recommends that applications save font names rather than numbers
(except for System front and application default font).

#192 Surprises in LaserWriter 5.0 and newer
Several changes to LaserWriter 5.0 that have caused problems for
some applications.

#193 So many BitMaps, so little time
How to convert a bitmap into a region.

#194 WMgrPortability
If you must draw outside a window, how to do it to cause the least
problems.

Now I can annoy the crap out of APDA until I
get my Tech Notes!!!

Might I ask now, when is the new System Software coming out??? I do know that
it has gone to beta, but does that mean May, June, or July?????

What happened to Apple's promised rewrite of the batch?

As I recall it, in Jan, the word was -- they're coming in Feb.

In Feb, they're being completely rewritten for Mar.

Now it's.....April batch due out soon.

Well....since you mentioned it, a synopsis of what 189 says would be appreciated
. Mailed if possible.....I kinda need the info quickly.

Technical Notes 1-194 (1-183 are revised, 184-194 are new) are being sent
to all Apple Certified Developers as part of the April developer mailing.
They are also available from APDA...1-183 are called "Tech. Notes 1985-1987"
and 184-194 are part of the TN subscription for 1988.

My appologies for doubting Apple's word of a rewrite in the Feb. mailing.
As I only received the Mar. mailing last wk, I guess I am not missing
anything yet. I'll be looking for the April mailing around end Apr/May...

Has the revision of tech notes 1-183 made the tech notes I've gotten over
the last 2 years out of date? The new set I received last week (184-194)
shows many have been obsoleted. Have the others changed in terms of their
content or is this just a "version number change"?

Thanks,

Tim Wilson

It is my understanding (and somebody correct me if I'm wrong) that Apple
is currently rewriting the lot of them. They were supposed to be
mailed to developers in March, but I just received the March mailing last
week and no tech notes yet. So, perhaps they're still to come, but just
a bit late ...

They're out. I'm not sure of the actual date, but someone in our group
picked 'em off of AppleLink this past Friday (4/15).

I assume the person who regularly ships them to comp.binaries.mac will
do so soon. In the meantime, well, ...whatever.
