[comp.sys.mac.programmer] System Tools 6.0

edgar@dasys1.UUCP (Edgar Balagot) (05/13/88)

What has happened to the System Tools 6.0 release that Apple promised??
Does anyone know?? I, for one, don't know. If anyone does, I would sure
like to find out. Thanks in advance. Eagerly awaiting reply. Hmmm...System
4.2, Multifinder 1.0 and Finder 6.0 are have too many bugs...that's why I am
so eager to find out!!

System Disk 6.0 is finished. It went "Golden" last Thursday. For those
who absolutely positively cannot wait another second, drive down to
Cupertino, with 4 formatted diskettes in hand, and go to the lobby of
DeAnza III, wait in line (if there is one) and get System Disk 6.0.

Or wait the few days it'll take to get it out to Dealers and authorized
users groups and get it from them. APDA should also have it within the
next few days too.

Which lobby of DeAnza III, Peter ? The North or the South ? Is there
a person I should contact ? I gave Apple a call and they dont seem to
know where 6.0 is being distributed.

Folks -

Peter is wrong. We do NOT have clone stations open to the general public
in the lobby of any of our buildings! For information on getting System
disks, please bug your dealers. That is what they are paid for! 8-)

Just to clear up confusion and potential thousands of angry hordes clamoring
for system software... :-)

Can you outline the highlights?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I blew it on this one. Indeed, as was pointed out, there is no
such machine in the lobby of DAIII with System Disk 6.0 on it. I mistook
one machine in one lobby during a gathering to celebrate 6.0 getting
released as something more than it was. Of course, that day happened to
be the last day I was down in Cupertino for a while, so I wasn't there
to notice that no machine was sitting in the lobby as I thought (mistakenly)
it would be.

Hence my previous posting.

Again, let me appologize for anyone I've inconvienced by this.

Well, for one thing, it evidently breaks 4th Dimension rather badly. Not
sure who's fault it is, yet....

Its probably that the versions of 6.0 that have been floating around are
not yet final. There are bugs in the date routines and others. I was
running it until I discovered that 4D was not working any more...

>Can you outline the highlights?

Sure, except this is going to be from the point of view of a user, since I
am not familiar with the internal changes.

First there are the usual bug fixes. I don't have a complete list of them,
however. Two that I know about: (1) popup menus can pop up on any screen
of a Mac II, (2) the bug in MultiFinder that could hang the machine has been
fixed (as promised in the Tech Note).

The Sound Manager has been ported to the Mac Plus and Mac SE. The sound
CDEV will now work on those machines and they can use any beep sound that a
Mac II could use.

All machines have the Notification Manager, which allows DAs and application
to give the use notification even if they are not the frontmost application.
(One of the things you can do is put a small icon in the menu bar to
indicate which apps need attention.) The Alarm Clock and Print Monitor have
been modified to use the Notification Manager.

Under MultiFinder, if you double click on a document and the application is
already running, MF will try to have the application open the document.
This depends on the application having an Open... item in the File menu,
although applications can include resources that direct MF to the right
item.

The Finder will identify INIT files as "Startup documents"; cdevs as
"Control Panel documents"; and device files as "Chooser documents".

The Finder supports a file versioning scheme (see Tech Note 189). A file
can have a vers resource to indicate its version. There can be a second
resource to indicate the version of a group of files. This addresses a
complaint people have had, namely that the different files making up a
system release have different version numbers. In System 6.0 if you do a
Get Info on any system file, you will see that it is part of "System
Software Version 6.0."

All the DAs on the disks now remember their window positions.

The disks come with the AppleShare workstation code (version 1.1).

There is the Map cdev, which lets you tell the system where you are
(latitude & longitude).

There is the Close View cdev, which can be used to magnify your screen.

There is the MacroMaker INIT, that lets you define simple keyboard macros.

QuickerGraf is incorporated into the system patches (not as an INIT).

There were some additions to TextEdit. In particular, TESetStyle now has a
new mode bit that says to toggle the styles. This addresses the problem
people were having when trying to remove a style (eg, bold) from characters
that had more than one style (eg, bold, italic).

The LaserWriter driver supports 11x17 pages (on printers that can handle
this). It also has a new option for smoothing bitmap fonts separately from
other bitmaps.

This covers the main highlights. As I mentioned, this is not a complete
list; I'm sure that other people, who were directly involved with the code,
can add to this list.

What about the Desktop file? Has the Resource Manager version used in
releases up to System Tools 5.0 been replaced by a faster version?

I understand this is done in the AppleShare(?) software, and that this
Desktop INIT? CDEV? can be successfully used in System Tools 5.0. Does
Apple officially support this usage, and are there any other benefits or
drawbacks besides performance? Does it affect programs such as Disk First
Aid, Disk Express, etc., in any way?

With the standard 5.0 version, adding a new icon, etc., to a hard disk can
be VERY slow!
