[comp.sys.mac.programmer] System 6.0 and 2Mb Mac 512Ke

jdb@mordor.s1.gov (John Bruner) (06/12/88)

Over the years I've upgraded my Mac 512, first by getting the 128K
ROMs and then by adding a Dove memory upgrade. As a result, I now
have a 2Mb 512Ke. I received System 6.0 a few days ago and I am
very disappointed to discover that it doesn't work on my machine.
Any attempt to touch the serial ports causes a crash, and although
it installs the Sound Manager, the SystemBeep is always "Simple Beep",
even when I've selected something else using the control panel.

The same floppy runs fine on a Mac+ at work. My guess is that
some of the patched-in code depends upon the small amount of hardware
that differentiates a Mac+ from a Mac 512Ke (e.g. the larger parameter
RAM).

I'd appreciate any suggestions for a workaround.

I've had the same problem's exactly! I have the exact same configuration
as John and have experienced the exact same problems. Does this mean I can't
run the new system software, but I thought the 128K roms in my machine were
the same as the ROM's in a Mac Plus, at least that's what the advertisments
for the Disk & ROM upgrade said.

I would really suck if I can't run the new system.

Me too, is this an oversight on Apple's part, or was the new system
designed so that 512Ke's are left out. I'd be really interested to know.

I also have a 512K->512KE->2 meg Dove upgraded Macintosh, but the
System Tools 6.0 release works just fine on my machine. I noticed
that someone else (David O'Rourke?) mentioned similar problems
getting any term programs to work under 6.0, with an identical
hardware setup. You didn't mention one thing, though: do you also
have the Dove SCSI add-on port? I do... perhaps the new System needs
to be able to find and initialize a SCSI port??? Comments?

One other interesting item of note: the only other incompatibility
I've ever run across which might be tied to the lack of a Macintosh
Plus logic board is the fact that the "Macintosh SE Guided Tour" disk
won't boot on my machine (it does boot on a 'regular' Plus). I can
run it manually after starting up with another system, however.

Disclaimer: I have more INITs in my System Folder than the mind can
            comfortably conceive.

Re: Problems with System 6.0 & 512e --Dove--> 2Mb

I've got the same upgrade, and althought 6.0 has beek working, I keep on
crashes into MacsBug. One of the most annoying bugs is that I get a crash
occasionally when playing a sound in Hypercard. The really strange thing is
that even if I flick the power off and on, [OK, I didn't leave it off for 30
seconds to be sure, but it shouldn't happen anyway] when I reboot the first
time, the mouse won't move. Button works [I can pull down the DA menu], but
won't budge from its spot. So I hit the interrupt key and rb with macsbug
[6.0b1] and then it works fine. I would _really_ appreciate some info on it-
not that it's a big problem- it doesn't happen real often- but because I'd
like to know what's going on....
