I'd like to know whether there are any Modula-2 interpreters/compilers for the Macintosh. Please drop me a line to my BITNET address and I'll post a follow-up article on the responses I get. Thanks very much. --Eric Romo (UD069225 AT NDSUVM1.BITNET) --University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota 58202.

Thanks to all who responded. Here is the gist of what I learned: Dennis Cohen <drc@dbase.a-t.com> said: >There are at least five Modula-2 compilers for the Mac. They are listed below >in decreasing preference (personal opinion): > >SemperSoft Modula-2: > MPW compiler, good code generation, 100% up to date with new system > routines, lots of example source, excellent support. >TML Modula-2: > MPW compiler, good code generation, lots of examples, up to date, > support is a little shaky. >MacModula-2: > Interpreter, not up to date, weak support, solid product >TDI Modula-2: > Buggy, slow, terrible editor, not up to date >MacLogimo Plus: > Shareware, slow, reasonably up to date, CHEAP, ugly interface Christopher Jewell, chrisj@cup.portal.com, also replied and added another compiler to the list: > MacMETH. This compiler was developed at ETH Zuerich, (derived from >the fast 1-pass compiler for the Lilith) and used to be available for >about $100 from: > Modula Corp. / 950 N. University Ave / Provo UT 84604 / 801-224-8999 >But I've heard that they don't answer their phone any more, and they >may be gone. If that is correct, it may be possible to purchase this >compiler from the European distributor: > Werner Heiz / Neugasse 71 / CH-8005 Zuerich / Switzerland >I don't know a phone # for Herr Heiz. Soren Larsen, SZL@DKDOU01, reported that he had seen a review of SemperSoft's Modula-2 product in Macworld(Feb 1988, p. 216-8). Within that MacWorld article, I found the reference to another review of the TML Modula-2 product, MacWorld(Dec. 1987, p152-3). These reviews were both written by Dennis Cohen(see first ref above). Soren also reported about MacMeth. In summary, there are 6 Modula-2 compilers: 1. SemperSoft Modula-2 Semper Software P.O. Box 225 Glen Ellyn, IL 60138 (312) 790-1253 2. TML Modula-2 TML Systems, Inc. 4241 Baymeadows Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32217 (904) 636-8592 3. MacModula-2 no further info. 4. TDI Modula-2: no further info. 5. MacLogimo Plus: no further info. 6. MacMeth Modula Corp. 950 N. University Ave Provo UT 84604 (801) 224-8999 I should also say that I got replies from other people too, however I chose to summarize only the ones with the most information about a product(s). If you want all the letters, please send me e-mail and then I'll send you the un-edited list. --Eric.
