[comp.sys.mac.programmer] Bizarre Hard Disk Behaviour

sce@runx.ips.oz (Simon Evans) (07/06/88)

I have a problem and a query--any help would be appreciated.

1. A workmate's DataFrame XP40 boots and runs fine, except that
about half of the data on the disk is 'invisible' -- including the
system folder. By 'invisible' I mean not visible in the finder,
standard file, or MPW even by specifying the full paths. The finder
still gives a reasonable figure for the amount of stuff on the disk
(about 20 mb) but selecting all, getting info and totalling the sizes
shows only about 10mb. The value of the MPW shell variable SystemFolder
is a garbage string, that gives an id -127 (Internal File System Error)
when one attempts 'Directory {SystemFolder}'. The stuff must be there
because the disk boots from it. Disk First Aid at first reports that
it is unable to verify the status of the disk, and then does some
scavenging and checking and has nothing else to say. What should we
use to either recover the disk and its structure, or to retrieve the
data?

2. On another tack, and on another machine, I was copying a file
(about 400k) from a floppy onto my Mac2/40mb/4mb/System 6.0/MF
when I wound up in TMON with a call to DebugStr('BAD NODE IN RELN').
Why? Is this the DeskTop Manager's doing, or the finder? Is my
directory structure likely to be damaged? I got the same DebugStr
3 times when I copied the file, and never since -- the program
runs fine.

Thanks in advance, Simon Evans.
