A recent chat with the manager of our university's microstore---a member of the Apple University Consortium as well as selling IBM and Zenith products---revealed that they received _very_ few enquiries about programming on the Macintosh, despite the fact that they sell Mac SEs and Mac IIs as fast as they can be ordered from Apple Canada. This is in comparison with the IBM world. Dave (the manager) went on to say how few programming languages are implemented on the Mac and how few books there were on the subject. This is of course utter nonsense---I have 2 C compilers, 2 Fortran compilers, a Prolog, APL, and HyperTalk, alone, plus a collection of books; and having browsed through MacTutor for several years I felt I was in a position to explain it to him. I then took a closer look at thebookshelves in the store and saw only THREE titles on Mac programming: one on assembly, and two on HyperCard scripts. There are more titles in a local W.H.Smith (a general bookshop) on Mac programming. Dave said he was willing to change his opinions and help neophyte Mac programmers if he saw more titles. I gave him the April APDA catalogue, and promised to solicit more information. I am therefore requesting help from the netland Mackers. If anyone reading this has links to publishers of books on programming the Mac in any language---Pascal, C, Assembly, FORTRAN, Prolog, Lisp, Hypertalk, spreadsheet macros, Forth, Logo, APL, _any_ language please would they ask the publisher to send a brochure describing their books to Dave McLeod Manager University of Alberta Microstore Students Union Building Edmonton, AB Canada T6G 2J7 Furthermore, if anyone has a database of such books, please would they let me know how to obtain it. Is there one on CIS? ------------------- Simon Tortike Dept Min, Met & UUCP: ...{ubc-vision,mnetor}!alberta!simon Petroleum Engg BITNET: stortike@ualtavm Univ. of Alberta AGT: 403/432-3338 Edmonton, AB Canada T6G 2G6
