[comp.sys.mac.programmer] What's the official name for the box in the scroll bar?

engber@speedy.cs.wisc.edu (Mike Engber) (09/01/88)

I'd like to know what the 'official' name is for the small box in the standard
scroll bars. IM I uses the term 'scroll box' in the interface guidlines and
'thumb' in the control manager section. User manuals use 'scroll box'.

Personally I prefer the term thumb as it's more descriptive. Scroll box sounds
more descriptive of the scrollable list manger boxes.

It's supposed to be a "thumb wheel" (I didn't know this until I read it
somewhere).
