[comp.sys.mac.programmer] hard disk CRASH?

waldman@endor.harvard.edu (benjamin Waldman) (09/19/88)

I just had the strangest thing happen to my hard disk (an HD20 in my
SE), and I was wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions or
helpful hints.

All of a sudden, the computer seemed completely unable to read from the
hard disk. When booting, the red light would flash a lot, as usual,
but no sound came from the drive -- apparently, the head wasn't moving.
After a while, the SE finally asked for a floppy, which booted, but when
reaching the Finder, the HD wasn't there. When I ran Apple's HD SC Setup,
I got the message that it couldn't find an appropriate drive hooked up to
the SCSI port. The red drive light was still flashing merrily though,
even though the head never moved.

This kept happening, even after powering on and off, and waiting.
Sometimes, the HD would be recognized, and the boot up would start,
but die in the middle. Finally, the thing booted, but it may not as
soon as I turn it off.

One thing I did notice was that the fan seemed a lot quieter when the
HD wasn't working. Could it be a fan problem? power supply problem?
HD problem?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Ben Waldman
