[comp.sys.mac.programmer] MPW 3.0B1 Questions

nopuklic@ndsuvax.UUCP (Blayne Puklich) (11/28/88)

I have a few questions for anyone who has had the opportunity to play
with (or owns) the beta release of MPW 3.0. Here they are:

1. Can you tell me anything about SADE that APDA doesn't tell me? How
useful does it seem in your opinion? Does it seem to be quick enough
so that you don't get frustrated waiting for it? I'd appreciate knowing
your personal list of likes and dislikes relating to SADE.

2. Any information about Projector other than the APDA sales pitch
would be helpful. Is it easy to use? Does it seem that it too will be
very helpful in managing projects of moderate to large size? Your personal
likes and dislikes would be helpful for Projector, also.

3. Are there any changes to the command language that are significant?

All in all, does the upgrade from MPW 2.0.2 to MPW 3.0B1 seem worth it?
I'm considering upgrading MPW C also, even though it's supposedly buggy.
Also, I'd like to know the answer to the question about precompiled
headers that was asked before. Simply knowing if the speed of the
compiler has improved would be helpful (we all know how slow MPW C seems).

Any help provided in helping me decide if the upgrade is worth it sure
would be appreciated.

Ah, yes. And are MacDraw tools supported? i.e. can I have a marquee de Sade?

More seriously, does anyone know when a C++ will show up (even in beta?) The
APDA packages are just plain vanilla Pascal and C.

I tried using Projector and found it too cumbersome for a single
programmer working on a single project. It seems quite powerful (i.e.
can track revision histories and "branches.") but just wasn't worth the
work for me.

Some other thought on MPW 3.0b:

   - Compiles in the background
What, don't you have some extra clock cycles to waste?
   - C compiler is ANSI draft compatible
I like to use function prototypes to improve error checking and this
	was a BIG help
   - Should be very stable (don't quote me on this one)
My earlier version (alpha 2) was VERY stable, so I don't expect lots
	of problems with this release
   - Linker isn't a lot faster
As usual, the linker remains a bottleneck in the turn-around time. My
only advice is to set the RAM cache up a bit and get a snack during
	particularly long makes
   - C Interfaces are reworked
The C interface libraries (#includes) have been reorganized into a more
logical format (e.g. closer to Inside Mac). This make it much easier to
decide which files need to be included and which ones don't.

All in all, I'm quite pleased with this release although I still use
Lightspeed C for preliminary work and particularly tough debugging tasks.
