A co-worker and I were discussing timesharing systems that are commercially available. I believe that the Un*x license agreement precludes establishing a commercial timesharing service. With all of the Un*x look-alike systems, however, does anyone out there know of a commercially available timesharing service providing access to anything resembling Un*x? Please respond by mail and I'll summarize if there is any response. ADVthanksANCE. TJ (with Amazing Grace) The Piper ssc-vax!tjj

There is a firm in Berkeley (BASIS, 1700 Shattuck, Zip is 94709, Phone (415) 841-1800 that offers timesharing. Try them to at least find out how they do it (I believe there is a special agreement you can make with AT&T to let you do timesharing). Dave Fiedler (..!ihnp4!laidback!infopro)

There are other companies offering timesharing services on UNIX. U.C. Berkeley does it on their educational machines, but only certain UCB classes can use the machines. I think CCA sells time. Also, there's something in Fargo, ND (this must imply there is such a place) that sells time - I got a blurb in the mail from a previous Usenix mailing list once. If you buy a commercial license, I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to sell time on it, provided you keep /usr/src protected.

EH??? Of course you can commercially timeshare your UN*X system (we run a bureau here), it's only the academic licence that stops you doing that. Your's in truly ripoff capitalism, Dave Lukes (...!vax135!ukc!root44!pdl)

I don't want to conduct an argument over the network which can be as easily achieved by yelling across the room, but I understand that to run a time- sharing service which you charge people connect time for, we would still require another licence. Just in case people think we are doing it unlicenced, we aren't, but we do let customers thinking of buying machines log in from time to time over the phone. John Collins ....!vax135!ukc!root44!jmc
