[comp.sys.mac.programmer] Any recommendations for books about programming C on the Macintosh?

moriarty@tc.fluke.COM (Jeff Meyer) (12/02/88)

Just got the latest APDAlog, and was wandering through the book section.
Noticed a few books on learning to program the Macintosh for C programmers,
specifically C PROGRAMMING TECHNIQUES FOR THE MACINTOSH by Schilke &
Mednieks (1986, Sybex); and the new 2nd Edition of Knaster's HOW TO WRITE
MACINTOSH SOFTWARE, which is advertised as having an expanded section on C
programming -- anyone had a chance to compare the two?

I have the Takatsuka, Huxham and Burnard USING THE MACINTOSH TOOLBOX WITH C,
and outside of its pre-HFS publishing date and the use of Consulair C, I'm
very satisfied with it. I'm curious how the Schilke & Mednieks book stacks
up to this.

"Young conservatives must feel the withdrawl
symptoms most. It's not just the loss of a father
figure, either. It's the utter banality of what
is to come. After eight years of revolutionary
activity, schmoozing with George Bush is going to
be difficult. Trained to kill, they're suddenly
having to take crash courses in outreach. You can
see them wandering aimlessly around Washington
these days, pained, simpering grins on their
faces, engaging in mild post-Reagan banter.
`How're you doing today, Clinton?' `Oh, kinder and
                            gentler, Dean, thank you.'"

When I'm coding (not often anymore, sigh) I use Takatsuka. It's a better
book than Mednieks, although I keep both handy and find that there are
places where I'll pull out the Mednieks book to look something up because
it's easier to find there (this is primarily a case of each index having
different strengths and weaknesses). I find them to be pretty complimentary
to each other, frankly.

What I'd *really* like to see, and I don't see why someone hasn't done it by
now, is a good C book based in LSC. It doesn't exist (that I've found). If
they were to update Takatsuka for the new toys and convert it to LSC, I'd
bet it'd give Danny Goodman's books a run for the money in the best seller
lists.

Now, how to convince the publishers we don't *need* the 39th HyperCard book
and get them to publish some real programming book instead.

I've heard that the revisions primarily have to do with libing happily
under multifinder, but I could be wrong. I haven't had a chance to go
browsing recently....

[Disclaimer time: you'll notice my name in the acknowledgements for the
Mednieks book. For what it's worth....]
