One of the articles (?Byte) has a picture of the SE/30 motherboard and labels the display memory. It consists of two 24 pin dips. I would strongly suspect that they each have 8 bit data busses and that the 68030 just treats it as a region of 16 bit memory rather than the usual 32 memory that it sees in the SIMMs. This would account for the slower than MacII graphics in benchmark results. A 32 bit bus add-on display cards would likely be a bit faster.
