[comp.sys.mac.programmer] questions about AppleShare and a file's attributes

A group of us are doing a project for a software engineering class. The project involves writing an access contol program for some of the computer labs here on campus. The person that we are writing it for has requested that we make it accessable to all computers (the reservation part of the system). For security purposes we want to be able to lock the database when not in use so that it can't be trashed easily. We came up with 2 ideas of doing such but aren't sure whether they are feasible or not.
1. The lab is running Appleshare 2.01 on a Mac II with 5 meg internal memory and a 40 meg hard drive. What we wanted to do was create a folder with different access privileges than that of the others (most of the folders are set so that people at the guest level can see the folders, but can't make changes. (i.e. can't write to it) What we were wondering was if a person's access privileges could be changed from within a program. This would hopefully mean that outside of the program people would not be able

to change the database, but while inside of the program they could have save to the database.

2. The other idea that we had was changing the files attributes from within the program, so that it could be locked while the program is not running and then from within the program it could be unlocked.

Any help would be appreciated
Thank you

Geno
