[comp.sys.mac.programmer] The USENET Macintosh Programmer's Guide: ENOUGH VOTES, ALREADY!

jnh@ece-csc.UUCP (Joseph Nathan Hall) (03/23/89)

OK, you can stop with the votes now. Sheesh! Boy, did a lot of you
crawl out of the woodwork. Now I know how Brad Templeton feels every
doggone day ...

If you haven't expressed an opinion yet, please don't do so ... my
mailbox hurts. I've got a more than adequate sample size on which to
base my decisions, anyway. (Thanks for your consideration ...)

At first glance, the MS Word/MacWrite question seems to be running pretty
close. I won't tally the results for a few days, though.

Some of the more constructive suggestions have included:

	1) A TeachText version (several people have suggested this)

	2) Make it as object-oriented as possible. While this may not
be practical at this time (given the lack of MacApp users,
and given that the C++ compiler isn't available yet), this is
definitely the wave of the future on the Mac and most other
computing environments. HOW we might implement this objective
	   is another matter entirely.

	3) Distribute source separately, in usable form. Test it WELL
beforehand. I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. That's
	   what the reviewers are for.

I do not have a definite timetable for this project in mind. (I have enough
deadlines at work, mind you.) The first thing we'll need, though, is a set
of submission guidelines and coding standards -- although, as I've said,
I will happily take submissions NOW. (Binhex it and mail it, regardless of
what it is. I don't want un-binhexed source code.)

If any of you have COMPLETE standards documents for Pascal or C coding,
I would be interested in seeing them. I have a reasonable amount of experience
in this area, and I've already seen quite a few suggestions from you folks,
I'd rather not read more comments re standards documents UNTIL the draft
standard is posted. BUT, again, if you have a complete standard that you
can e-mail (or USnail), I'll happily inspect it. In particular, I'd like
to see a couple of Pascal standards.

Thanks for the growing interest and the enormous amount of mail (gosh,
certainly does make one feel appreciated!). The vote tally will appear
around the first of next week. Reviewers and submitters can expect a
trial mailing later next week.

I disagree. DA's are supposed to have problems in future System releases,
and not very many of us have enough memory to effectively use MultiFinder....
