I have an application which I developed on a Mac+. It uses Macintalk. I recently took delivery of an SE/30 (which is very nice, it's cut down my coffee intake because there is no longer the time to make a cup while waiting for a compilation). Trouble is my application won't speak to me on the new machine - or at least it only does so intermittently. Is there any obvious reason for this? Some more information which might be relevant: My program uses other sounds too, so it uses both the free-form sound generators and the square-wave generator. The application is written in object pascal. The program behaves as if it is speaking in that there is a pause in execution when speech should be getting generated. Other simpler programs which I have written using Macintalk have transferred to the SE/30 without problem. Of course Apple's answer would be that Macintalk is not a supported product, but I do have good reasons for using it over Smoothtalker. All offers of ideas gratefully received.

Here's what you have to do: 1) Make sure you have the latest version of Macintalk (version 1.31). 2) After calling other sounds, but before you reopen Macintalk, close the sound driver, then reopen it again. You might have to send a string of phonic noise when Macintalk is first started up, to kind of "kick start" it.}i Owen Hartnett Brown University Computer Science omh@cs.brown.edu.CSNET
