[net.trivia] Dr. Demento

doehring (11/15/82)

A friend of mine says that this is a Tom Lehrer song and that
you should be able to find the title from that information since she
cannot remember it and there are some books which list most of his
songs.

As to Dr. Demento, I was a fan of his for a long time, if I was
not home on Sunday nights, I would have the tape recorder on to catch as
much as possible of the show. I especially liked the Monty Python cuts
that he played.

I met the man once, about 6 years ago in Atlanta when he was in
town for a promotion. He was as demented as he sounded on the radio.
>From this meeting, I got an AUTOGRAPHED copy of "Dr. Demento's Delights"
which includes such wonderful songs ( on the G side ) as "They're Comming
to Take Me Away" and ( my favorite ) "The Cockroach that Ate Cincinnatti".
On the flip ( PG ) side, you get songs like "Big Ten Inch" and "Who Put the
Benzadrine in Mrs. Murphy's Ovaltine".

I haven't heard a thing about the man or show since I came up
north to school 4 years ago. Just before that, the local outlet changed
from WQXI ( 94 ) [ a very popular station ] to WZGC ( 93 ) [ a not quite
so popular station ] so it may have been from lack of interest that the
show was canceled in Atlanta. For a while, they had the 96-Rock Comedy
hour, but alas, this too bit the dust. It's getting late and I have to
do school work ( in FORTRAN no less ) so goodbye for now.

P.S. I have his old address ( from the cover of the album ) if anyone is
interested. ( it is back in the room right now and it's too cold to
    go and get it ).

	    Stay Demented........

It turns out that Dr. Demento was an undergraduate at the college I attended
(Reed College) about 5 years before I arrived. He was news director of the
local campus radio station. We still got mail for him ten years later. His
actual name is Barry something or other.

I am not sure who wrote the song about the murderer dismembering his date
but it was not Tom Lehrer. His song "The Masochism Tango" is reminisent
of it but no cookie. In fact in the song, he, was the masochist while
his partner was the sadist:
I ache for the touch of your lips dear,
but much more for the touch of your whips dear,
You can raise welts like nobody else,
as we dance to the masochism tango!

The person who wrote:

is misinformed.

While "The Masochism Tago is a well-known Tom Lehrer song,
"I Hold Your Hand in Mine" is ALSO a Tom Lehrer song.
This is SOLID information.
