[comp.sys.mac.programmer] MultiFinder & ResEdit

jane@XAIT.Xerox.COM (Jane Eisenstein) (05/10/89)

Are there are MultiFinder compatible versions of ResEdit? If so, could
someone let me know what version number(s) are MultiFinder compatible?
I'd be willing to spring for the APDA ResEdit package, but only if I
can run it under MultiFinder.

The current ResEdit (or at least the most recent one that I have) is
1.2b4, and it is completely MultiFinder compatible. It also fixes a
large number of other major bugs, such as the infamous resource file
corruption if you quit without explicitly closing your changed files.
(It took me several weeks to break myself of the habit of closing every
window by hand before quitting!)

The only new bug I've observed is that the gray outlines of dialog
items have been screwed up, displaced by one pixel, so that alignment
operations and resizing operations can't be made to conform to an
implicit alignment. For instance, say you have a user item and you
want to grow it only horizontally. It used to be that you could grab
the corner and drag it out making sure that the outline aligned wqith
the bottom line of the item itself. If you do that now, then you will
add one pixel to the vertical size of the item. Similarly, you used to
be able to drag the gray outline of an item next to another item,
aligning top and bottom or right and left, then drop it, and it would
be aligned. Now it will be off by one pixel. This is somewhat
compensated for by the addition of an "Align to Grid" item in the new
DITL menu, but I hope it gets fixed anyway. It's a constant bother.

The latest version of ResEdit is 1.2 (final). It comes with many samples in C
and Pascal. It is available on AppleLink, Phil and Dave's Excellent CD (the new
Developer Helper disk from Apple DTS), and APDA ($30, $1 for each day you have
to wait for it).

Here are the first 2 pages of the liner notes that come with the CD:

The Zen of Phil & Dave:

Phil & Dave Excellent CD is a comprehensive collection of resources for Apple
Developers, and it is the first in a series of development tools provided on
CD-ROM under the title of Developer Helper(TM). In this prerelease incarnation,
Phil & Dave is a rough example of what can be done with today's CD-ROM tech-
nology to help developers (and Apple) organize and more effectively use all the
information that is available for product development.

As in the past with the Developer Technical Support (DTS) Technical Notes
Stack and the just-released Q & A Stack, Phil & Dave is another step towards
Apple's goal of providing its developers with the best technical support in
the industry. With Phil & Dave, you now have a tool that puts at your finger-
tips much of the development information you need on a day-to-day basis. Now
you can find the answers to many of your technical questions in a matter of
seconds, without searching through tomes of unorganized technical documentation.

Phil & Dave also includes programming tools and utilities written by developers,
and Apple engineers. These little tidbits can make your life a lot easier and
might save you from re-inventing the wheel. If you have any favorties that you
would like to contribute, let us know and wh'll try to get them included in
the next release.

Tha Apple Developer Group will be releasing new volumes of Developer Helper
every quarter, and these will be sent in the regular Developer Services'
monthly mailings.

Phil & Dave and everyone else in the Apple Developer Group (including the
dogcow) thank you for using Phil & Dave's Excellent CD, and especially for
creating the great products that make the Apple(R) II and Macintosh(R) com-
puters as successful as they are. Because Phil & Dave is a tool for you, your
feedback and suggestions are important to us (really). Please let us know what
you think and what we can do to make tools such as Phil & Dave more useful to
you. Address your comments to:

Just remembered, the TN stack went to Sumex, not the net. Thus the question
becomes: any plans to send Q & A to Sumex?

One note: I think that the people at Apple: Larry R., Mark J, and all others,
are really doing a great job of keeping us informed and answering questions.
Kudos to all!

The Q & A Stack, as well as the updated Technical Notes Stack, and the
new MacDTS Sample Code will be distributed to all developers via the
monthly mailings (for those who do not have CD-ROM drives) and will be
posted to AppleLink, Usenet, and other electronic services. These
are examples of our "one-to-many" solutions which ALL developers get and
will always get.

All developers who are Partners, Associates, and Certified with Apple will
be receiving a copy of "Phil & Dave's Excellent CD" in their monthly mailing.
At this point in time, there may not be any way for anyone who is not
Certified to receive this CD, although almost all of the information is
available on the nets (or will be soon) or on disk somewhere.

If there is a great demand for the CD, then I'm sure the powers that be can
be convinced to put it out through APDA. If you think you are interested in
this, send me a message at an address below and we'll look into it further.

Yes, when I send things of this size out, they go to SUMEX as well as other
archive sites like SIMTEL-20, etc. Anything larger than a Technical Note
will usually not be sent directly to newsgroups.

Does this mean that after having paid $20 three months ago for
1.2b3, I now have to shell out another $30 to get the real version??
It's no wonder Apple releases developers' tools only through APDA,
if APDA had any competition it'd go bankrupt in a week!

Some observations on the 'final' ResEdit 1.2:

All the pickers with templates now use Monaco 12 as the default font.
YECCCHH!!! What was wrong with Chicago? This is *bogus*.

ResMENU, the *excellent* MENU editor that installs as an 'RSSC' rsrc,
breaks under 1.2 (yet again). (This was v1.2b1.1, which worked well
with ResEdit 1.2b3.) Why isn't a graphic menu editor included as a
standard part of ResEdit, like the DITL or ICN# editors?

The "GetInfo" dialog for files and folders now includes a popup menu to
edit Color (as seen in the Finder). Nice.

List windows are now resizable, and the Preferences dialog includes
options for setting default sizes. Very, very nice.

Conclusion (not entirely objective):

Items 1 and 2 above were more important to me than 3 and 4. I went
  back to 1.2b3.

Does anyone know of a new version of MenuEdit ResEdit resource that works
with version 1.2 of ResEdit? The current version does not. Another problem
that has not been addressed in ResEdit1.2 is the ability to play sound on
ANY machine when 6.0.2 is installed (and with it the NEW sound manager
which is needed to play snd resources).
