Okay, we are clearly on the dawn of a new flood of information via CD-ROM, and
the impending availability of "Phil and Dave's Excellent CD" from Apple, just
chock full of goodies, makes it seems like now is the time to look into getting
a CD-ROM drive. Besides, the ability to play music through a $7000 Mac II is
just too good to pass up ;-).
Anyway, what's out there? I know that Apple has a drive, and it probably is
a pretty good one, with nice solid features and decent system support, and
also probably costs a bit more than third-party drives. I have heard that
there is a company that sells a driver for less than $100 that will function
with nine or so CD-ROM type drives. So clearly, there is some choice in the
market right now.
o What are the drives that are out there, and what are there relevant
features?
o What will such a drive cost me?
o What nifty cool neato software comes with the drives or is generally
available out there in the world?
o What special considerations to using a CD-ROM are there that I
haven't thought of? (Like "Can't be served via TOPS", or maybe
"Drivers eat memory" or somesuch thing that doesn't seem likeley
but would be *real* irritating.)
I apologize if this has been beaten to death recently, I am a somewhat
sporadic reader of these groups. Any and all info would be greatly
appreciated.
E-mail is preferable to news postings as I don't read news often enough.
Thanks in advance for any help....

Actually, could the info be posted on the net also? I'm sure a lot of people are interested... Collin Douglas
