[comp.sys.mac.programmer] What Mechanisms Support IPC Over a Network?

I would like to know what mechanisms are available over Appletalk for
interprocess communication over a network?  Say I have some process
running on a VAX that I would like to control via a Mac interface...
what are the tools currently available to do this?

If someone knows a good article that summarizes this topic I would
like to know about it.
