First of all, thanks to all the people who responding with comments on this matter. Some of the suggestions made the code more robust. As it turns out the problem was one of rank stupidity on my part, as I should have known, as it was time for my quarterly ``weird problem wild goose chase'' anyway. It turned out that the bug was in my _debugging_ procedure. I have this habit of sticking debug() calls in my code; these cause dialogs to pop up with informative messages, and I had several in this suspect code telling me how far I was getting. debug() was calling useResFile, and under one particular circumstance, which (of course), could only happen in the particular situation I was trying to debug, it was not restoring things properly. Bleah! I will dutifully smash into my own face any cream pies mailed to me.
