[net.micro] Printer query

msm@sri-unix (05/27/82)

I am currently in the market for a printer for my home microcomputer
system. If you have had any experience with any of the printers in the
$500 - $700 price range, I would appreciate receiving your comments about
them. Please send the comments via mail; I will collect them and send them
to net.micro if there is enough interest.

Thanks!

If the following printers cost the same which would you buy? (Gemini 10X,
Epson FX80, Prowriter, Okidata 92, other). Consider cost and performance,
would your answer change?

I don't know anything about the others but, having just purchased a Hewlett
Packard 82906A printer which I believe is on OEM'ed Epson FX-80, I can say
that I'm delighted with it. Aside from about 20 or so variations in fonts,
pitches, sizes, densities, etc, it has the capability for user-definable (sp?)
fonts. Also, it has graphics capability, tractor or friction feed, and can
move the paper in either direction. (might come in handy some day????)
Also, the 82906A has an IEEE-488 (HPIB, GPIB) interface.
Caution: A. I'm not 100% sure that this really is an Epson FX-80.
           B. Even if it is, some of the features I just described
may be found only on the HP version.

Now....if any of you in net land know anything about CHEAP ($200 - $300)
daisy wheel printers, *PLEASE* post it on this or net.peripherals.

I purchased the Gemini 10X printer, and am quite happy with it. It was a close
call between it and the Prowriter; the Gemini listed for $319 and the Prowriter
went for about $375. The Gemini had the advantage of a down-loadable character
set and some semblance of Epson MX80 compatibility, while the Prowriter was
built like a tank--it uses metal instead of plastic in its construction.

Both of these are quite a bit cheaper than an Epson or Okidata equivalent.
I went to Computers Plus in Littleton, MA (they do mail order, too.)
Very good prices.

like to price of $329.
